We ask the Council to reject the Petition of the Arapahoe Group LLC for a Zoning Change for a Mixed-Use Development on Arapahoe Rd, LaSalle Rd and Farmington.

HISTORY:
A developer who tried (and failed) to get approval several years ago for a huge development in the heart of West Hartford (block bordered by Woodrow, LaSalle, Farmington Ave. and Arapaho) is back with an even bigger proposal - looming over the neighborhood and Center and adding congestion to our narrow crowded streets. Nearly 75% of the buildings in the traditional Center are 1-2 stories tall. The proposal represents a huge increase in density.

WE FAVOR THOUGHTFUL DEVELOPMENT
Other big development proposals in the pipeline near the Center don't encroach on the Center or neighborhoods. We support that type of development BUT don't need this massive change to encourage thoughtful development in the Center!

THE NEW PROPOSAL - Massively out of scale with existing Center:

  • Bigger & taller - 6 + stories plus an additional large building in the "Webster Bank"parking lot.

  • Traffic, Congestion, Safety Risks. Turns neighborhood streets into highwaysand driveways.

  • Demolishes neighborhood houses and turns them into parking lots and driveways.

  • Jeopardizes the character and strength of the very successful Center.

  • Encroaches on existing residential neighborhoods.

The Center is an engine of quality of life and economic value to the entire Town of West Hartford and we should develop thoughtfully to preserve its value to the community!
